Mass at the Cathedral of Chascomús in tribute to Raúl Alfonsín, on the way to the centenary of his birth

A mass at the Cathedral of Chascomús will kick off a series of commemorative events honoring Raúl Alfonsín's legacy as Argentina approaches the centenary of his birth in 2027.

On March 12th, a mass will be held at the Cathedral of Chascomús to mark the beginning of a wide range of activities celebrating the centenary of Raúl Alfonsín's birth in 2027. This tribute is set against the backdrop of recognizing Alfonsín’s significant role in the return of democracy to Argentina and his commitment to human rights, which included overseeing trials against military juntas during his presidency. The mass will take place just shy of 99 years since Alfonsín's birth and will involve family members, former officials, and leaders of the Radical Civic Union.

The mass, presided over by local bishop Juan Ignacio Liébana, is only the first in a series of events planned throughout the country to honor Alfonsín’s legacy. March is significant not just for celebrating his birth but also for memorializing his legacy, as it marks the month of his death on March 31, 2009. This duality highlights the enduring impact of Alfonsín on Argentine civil society and politics, resonating with ongoing discussions about democracy, human rights, and national identity in Argentina.

As Argentina prepares for the centenary celebration, these initial commemorations serve to remind the public of the importance of preserving democratic values and recognizing the historical context that shaped the country post-dictatorship. The planned activities will spotlight the achievements and values that Alfonsín championed, ensuring that his contributions are remembered and honored in the collective memory of the nation.
