Increase in teams for the promotion playoffs to the Premier League
The English Football League announced that starting from the 2026-2027 season, the number of teams in the promotion playoffs for the Premier League will increase from four to six.
The English Football League (EFL) announced a significant change regarding the promotion playoffs to the Premier League, stating that the playoff will expand to include six teams instead of the current four, beginning in the 2026-2027 season. This decision aims to increase the number of competitive matches during the critical final stages of the season. Currently, the top two teams in the EFL Championship automatically earn promotion to the Premier League, while a playoff among the next four teams determines the third and final promotion slot.
Starting with the next season, teams finishing in third and fourth places will qualify for the semi-final stage of the playoff, while the four teams ranked fifth to eighth will compete in knockout matches to secure a place in the semi-finals. The EFLβs CEO, Trevor Birch, emphasized that since its introduction in the 1986-1987 season, the playoffs have become a significant and thrilling event in the local football calendar, capturing the drama and excitement that characterize the Championship.
Birch expressed confidence that after months of discussions with clubs and other stakeholders, this modification will further enhance the Championship as a competitive league, improving the overall spectacle of its finale and creating even more engaging matchups for fans. This change also reflects the EFL's commitment to innovation and enhancing the sporting experience within English football, which could have broader implications for league dynamics and fan engagement in the coming years.
