Undisciplined passengers can be banned from flying for up to a year
Brazil's ANAC proposes new rules to penalize unruly passengers with fines and temporary bans from flights.
The Brazilian Civil Aviation Authority, ANAC, has introduced a proposal to address issues with unruly passengers who disrupt order on flights and at airports. Under the new regulations, passengers who refuse to follow safety instructions or create disturbances can face fines of up to R$ 17,500 and could be placed on a 'no fly list' for up to 12 months, varying based on the severity of the incident. This initiative reflects a growing concern over aviation safety and passenger conduct.
The proposal was discussed in a public hearing at the Chamber of Deputies and is set for a vote by the board this Friday, with implementation planned for six months after publication in the Official Gazette. Current regulations allow for expulsions and even emergency landings to manage particularly problematic passengers, indicating that there is already a legal framework addressing these issues, but the proposed changes aim to strengthen the measures in place.
Airlines will have the authority to refuse ticket sales to disruptive individuals, expanding their powers to manage passenger behavior effectively. If approved, these rules could lead to a significant shift in airline policies and passenger conduct, as potential infractions could result in longer-term travel restrictions. This measure represents an ongoing effort by the Brazilian government to enhance air travel safety and ensure discipline within the aviation sector, particularly as international travel increases post-pandemic.
