POSTIMEES UKRAINE: Ukrainian soldiers have the chance to return home
Ukraine plans a significant reform to attract soldiers as it faces severe manpower shortages due to heavy losses in the ongoing war with Russia.
In the fifth year of the war, Ukraine is set to launch extensive reforms aimed at recruiting soldiers, as frontline units risk running out of personnel while they attempt to halt the prolonged offensive from the Russian army. Military analyst Viktor Kevljuk highlighted four main issues necessitating these reforms: the lack of available men for the front lines, avoidance of mobilization, lack of motivation to fight, and an unjust reservation system that exempts essential state workers and enterprise employees from conscription.
Estimates suggest that Ukraine's military losses have reached between 500,000 to 600,000 personnel, with an additional urgent need for up to 500,000 soldiers, according to Kevljuk. It is emphasized that the focus of these reforms should not only be on quantitatively increasing troop numbers but also on qualitatively enhancing the recruitment process to ensure a more effective fighting force.
The Ukrainian government has not publicly disclosed official data on the scale of losses or how many individuals are being mobilized each month, leaving a gap in the understanding of the current state of Ukraine's military strength and the challenges it faces as it strives to bolster its defenses against ongoing aggression.
