Procon Fortaleza fines Fraport R$ 3.1 million for removal of chairs at the airport
Procon Fortaleza has imposed a fine of R$ 3.1 million on Fraport Brazil for the removal of chairs at Pinto Martins International Airport, affecting passenger comfort.
Procon Fortaleza, the municipal department responsible for consumer protection in Fortaleza, Brazil, has levied a fine of R$ 3,121,427.69 on Fraport Brazil, the administrator of Pinto Martins International Airport. This fine was imposed following complaints from passengers regarding the absence of seating in the airport's arrival area, which were reported back in January. Passengers expressed discomfort and challenges while waiting at the airport, which prompted the investigation by Procon.
Fraport Brazil defended its actions by stating that the chairs were not removed but rather strategically relocated; they claimed this was in accordance with regulations stipulated in their contract with the National Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC). However, Procon Fortaleza rejected this explanation, with its president, Wellington SabΓ³ia, asserting that Fraport's actions constituted a violation of consumer protection laws and had adverse consequences for passenger safety and comfort. The consumer rights organization has highlighted the increased vulnerability of travelers due to the lack of adequate seating arrangements.
The ruling from Procon Fortaleza underscores the critical importance of consumer rights and the responsibilities of service providers in the aviation industry. This case illustrates how authorities can hold companies accountable for their practices, particularly when those practices undermine the well-being of consumers. By imposing this substantial fine, Procon Fortaleza aims to send a clear message to companies operating in the transportation sector about the necessity of adhering to legal standards and ensuring a positive experience for passengers.
