SM League Legend: The End of Work Explained in a Surprising Way โ€“ This is the Response from the Hockey Boss

Antti Boman, the most experienced referee in SM-liiga history, is set to retire this spring, with concerns raised about his age as the reason for the decision not to extend his contract.

Antti Boman, who has officiated the most games in the history of SM-liiga, is concluding his career as a referee this spring. Having officiated over 1,000 matches, he made history by surpassing Timo Favorin's total of exactly 1,000 games. Boman was acknowledged as the best referee in the league for eight consecutive years, as chosen by the league players, highlighting his esteemed position in Finnish ice hockey.

Despite his successful career, Boman revealed that he was informed last spring that there would be no work available for him after this current season, stating that age was the sole reason given for this decision. This lack of further explanation regarding his retirement raised questions about whether age was the only factor influencing SM-liiga's decision-making concerning referee contracts.

Jussi Markkanen, the sports director of SM-liiga who negotiates contracts with professional referees, responded to the concerns surrounding Boman's retirement. Markkanen emphasized that there are no rules dictating an age limit for referees. He mentioned that every year both he and Boman assess the latter's interest in continuing, and last year they had agreed that Boman could potentially continue for one more year, putting doubt on the explanation provided to Boman.
