EU, FdI-ECR: European values and roots, ECR Group conference in Viterbo with Brunetta

A conference discussing European identity and traditions was held in Viterbo by the ECR Group, featuring over 20 MEPs from across Europe.

The conference titled ‘Between Stone and Spirit: Values, Roots and Traditions in Relaunching Europe's Competitiveness and Cohesion’ took place today in Viterbo, as part of a three-day external meeting of over 20 MEPs from the ECR Group. The discussions focused on the connection between European identity, cultural roots, economic competitiveness, and territorial cohesion. In light of significant economic, social, and geopolitical challenges, the rich heritage of European values interwoven with Christian and humanistic traditions was proposed as a strategic lever to enhance trust, human capital, job quality, and balanced regional development.

During the day, the MEPs also visited Assisi, where they attended the papal basilica and the Sacred Convent of Saint Francis, coinciding with the presentation of the saint's relics. This visit emphasizes the ECR Group's commitment to engaging with Europe's cultural heritage, underlining a narrative that seeks to reinforce the importance of historical roots in shaping modern European policies. By integrating traditional values into contemporary discourse, the conference aims to position these cultural elements as vital components in fostering economic and social unity within the EU.

Vice President of the European Parliament, Antonella Sberna, highlighted the significance of such gatherings in addressing contemporary issues facing Europe, suggesting that a robust connection to cultural and spiritual identities can serve as a foundation for rejuvenating Europe's competitive edge. The overall goal is to create a cohesive vision for the future that respects the past while navigating the complexities of modern governance, making the case for a Europe that is not only competitive but also culturally enriched and socially cohesive.
