DPBEA of Campinas is Target of Inspection After Complaints of Animal Mistreatment

The DPBEA of Campinas (SP) has come under inspection by environmental police following allegations of animal mistreatment and structural deficiencies.

The Department of Protection and Animal Welfare (DPBEA) in Campinas, São Paulo, is currently facing inspection by the Environmental Military Police due to a complaint regarding animal mistreatment. This inspection was initiated after a request from the Public Ministry of São Paulo. The DPBEA is tasked with sheltering animals that have suffered from mistreatment, abandonment, or accidents, providing them with necessary medical treatment until they recover, and ensuring they are spayed, vaccinated, and microchipped.

A report from the Regional Council of Veterinary Medicine raised serious concerns about the structural conditions of the DPBEA, stating that the facility lacks adequate infrastructure to function properly or to care for the animals it houses. At present, the shelter accommodates 83 dogs and 63 cats, but the inspection uncovered numerous issues, including the absence of full-time veterinarians to attend to the animals in care.

These findings highlight the urgent need for improvements in the shelter's operations and facilities to ensure the well-being of the animals. The issues outlined by the inspection could lead to further actions from the authorities, focusing on ensuring the DPBEA meets required standards for animal welfare and safety to prevent any future instances of mistreatment.
