Vilnius resident risks losing 'special purpose' car 'Mercedes-Benz'

A Vilnius resident could lose his special purpose 'Mercedes-Benz' vehicle after being caught transporting contraband cigarettes, according to border authorities.

A resident of Vilnius, who allegedly became involved in cigarette smuggling, faces the risk of losing his specially equipped 'Mercedes-Benz' vehicle. The incident occurred Wednesday evening when border guards from the Varėna unit, operating at a checkpoint near the village of Širvių, stopped the vehicle on its way to Šalčininkai. This area is adjacent to the borderline with Belarus, where customs controls are stringent.

The car was driven by a 25-year-old local, who had previous encounters with border authorities. Upon suspicions that he might be conveying illegal goods, the officers decided to check the vehicle more thoroughly at the Gintaras Žagunis border post, which is equipped with facilities for detailed inspections. The investigation revealed that hidden compartments had been installed in the rear bumper of the car.

From these compartments, the border guards confiscated 570 packs of 'NZ Gold' cigarettes originating from Belarus. This incident highlights ongoing issues related to cigarette smuggling in the region, especially given the geographical context of the area surrounded by Belarus, raising concerns over border security and customs enforcement.
