'IRIS Dena sent an SOS call', Indian Navy narrates what happened before the attack on Iranian warship

The Indian Navy has detailed its response following the sinking of the Iranian warship IRIS Dena, which was attacked while en route from Iran to India.

In the aftermath of the sinking of the Iranian warship IRIS Dena off the coast of Sri Lanka, the Indian Navy has outlined its rescue operations that began as soon as a distress call was received. Reports indicate that on March 4, 2026, the Sri Lankan Navy communicated to the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) Colombo that they had received a distress signal from the IRIS Dena, which was located approximately 20 nautical miles west of Galle and operating within the Sri Lankan search and rescue area.

Upon receiving the SOS, the Indian Navy promptly initiated search and rescue operations. By 10 AM on March 4, a long-range maritime surveillance aircraft had been deployed to bolster the ongoing search operation led by Sri Lanka. Additionally, the Navy indicated that a second aircraft was placed on standby, equipped with drop-able life rafts, to assist in a timely response to the situation. The INS Tarangini was also dispatched to the area to provide further support.

This incident highlights the growing tensions in the region involving Iran and the United States, as the attack on IRIS Dena underlines the complex nature of maritime security in the Indian Ocean. It also emphasizes the importance of international maritime cooperation in crisis situations, showcasing the proactive role the Indian Navy is prepared to undertake in safeguarding lives at sea and ensuring regional stability.
