Nationwide announces £20,000 update that will benefit 10,000 customers
Nationwide is expanding its interest-free loan scheme to help 10,000 homeowners improve energy efficiency, with loans ranging from £5,000 to £20,000.
Nationwide Building Society has announced an expansion of its Green Additional Borrowing scheme, aiming to provide interest-free loans to a total of 10,000 mortgage customers. This initiative allows qualifying borrowers to access funds ranging from £5,000 to £20,000 to finance energy-efficient upgrades such as solar panels, insulation, and new windows. Initially launched in June 2023, the program was set up to assist 5,000 households and has so far disbursed approximately £60 million in loans, with the average loan amount being around £13,000.
The scheme is designed to bolster energy efficiency in homes, a critical area as climate change issues intensify and energy costs continue to rise. The South West region is reported to have had the highest adoption rate of the loans, accounting for 16% of completions, followed by the Outer Metropolitan and Outer South East regions, each with a 12% share. This uptake reflects a growing awareness and accessibility of financial support aimed at enhancing sustainable housing practices among homeowners.
Overall, Nationwide's increased funding has the potential to significantly impact not only the participating homeowners through reduced energy costs and increased property value but also contribute positively towards broader environmental goals. By enabling more families to invest in greener technologies, the initiative aligns with wider efforts to foster a sustainable future and mitigate the effects of climate change on national and local levels.
