An unusual situation on store egg shelves
Finland is experiencing nationwide availability issues with eggs this winter due to annual changes in chicken stocks and an increased demand spurred by social media and economic factors.
This winter, Finland is facing notable availability issues with eggs across various stores, which has been attributed to the annual changes in chicken stocks wherein new hens are not yet laying eggs, as well as a transition from battery cages to free-range production, leading to a 15-20% reduction in the chicken population. The demand for eggs has surged, benefiting from social media trends and the current economic climate that pushes consumers towards more cost-effective protein sources.
According to reports from Kesko and the S-group, the shelves of stores have shown striking emptiness when it comes to eggs. However, instead of an outright shortage, the situation has been described as a problem of availability. Laura Koponen, the purchasing and sales manager at Kesko, confirmed the challenges in supply, indicating that this situation is being experienced uniformly across Finland.
The S-group also acknowledged the shortage of eggs in their chain of stores nationwide. Store officials, including Juhani Haara, the sales manager, assured customers that they are continuously working to ensure the best possible product availability in stores, highlighting that despite the challenges, eggs are still being delivered to local shops regularly.
