Finnish athletes crowned world champions in ski orienteering short course; Kudre finishes 25th.
Finnish athletes dominated the ski orienteering world championships in Japan, with Doris Kudre from Estonia finishing in 25th place.
At the ski orienteering world championships held in Ruutsu, Japan, the final individual event was the short course with a mass start. Both the men's and women's classes saw gold medals awarded to Finnish athletes, showcasing their exceptional skills in the sport. Estonia's best performers, Doris Kudre and Olle Ilmar Jaama, represented their country commendably, although they faced tough competition from the leaders.
In the women's race, Finnish athlete Amanda Yli-Futka secured her first world championship title with a remarkable time of 55:18 minutes over the challenging 12 km course that included 400 meters of elevation gain. The silver medal was unusually shared by Magdalene Olsson from Sweden and Eliane Deininger from Switzerland, both having completed the course in the same time, but trailing Yli-Futka by 1 minute and 33 seconds. Kudre's performance, registering a time of +12:47 behind the leader, earned her a noteworthy 25th place finish.
Despite finishing in 25th place, Kudre expressed satisfaction with her performance, highlighting that her primary goal was to navigate the course with strong orienteering skills. Just moments before the finish, she was competing for the 20th position but lost crucial time due to slower route choices. Kudre's experience at this world championship illustrates the high level of competition in ski orienteering and her potential for future events as she continues to refine her skills on the international stage.
