A Cry from Helsinki - Chapels 'Full of the Dead'

Helsinki's crematoria are overwhelmed and storage facilities for the deceased are reaching capacity.

Helsinki is currently facing a significant backlog in its cremation services, with local crematoria running out of storage for corpses. According to Juha Kumara, a funeral director from a Helsinki-based service, only one of the three incinerators used by Helsinki's congregations is operational at the moment, leading to urgent challenges in dealing with the influx of deceased individuals. Kumara notes that problems with equipment have become frequent, further exacerbating the situation.

The Hietaniemi crematorium, managed by the Crematorium Foundation, is also at full capacity, with both incinerators in Espoo being operational only sporadically. This has resulted in a crisis where new deceased bodies cannot be cremated or accepted by local congregations, significantly affecting families waiting for the last rites of their loved ones. Moreover, the head of Helsinki's funeral services, Teemu Kylmäkoski, confirmed that two of the incinerators at Malmi and Honkanummi cemeteries are currently out of service due to technical issues.

This situation calls for urgent attention to improve the infrastructure of crematoria in Helsinki. As deaths rise or remain persistent, this could pose a humanitarian issue, affecting the bereaved families who are unable to obtain timely cremation for their deceased. Authorities will need to address the limitations of the current facilities and ensure that systems are in place to operate efficiently and humanely in times of crisis.
