Åkesson: Pause teenage deportations

Swedish Democrat leader Jimmie Åkesson calls for an immediate pause on teenage deportations until an alternative solution is developed.

Jimmie Åkesson, the leader of Sweden's Democrats, has proposed pausing all deportations of teenagers until a new legislative provision, known as a 'ventil', is established. He argues that it would be more reasonable to halt the deportations rather than implementing a flawed system that does not address individuals' unique circumstances. Currently, the government is working on a new law that aims to introduce this alternative provision, but Åkesson believes such legislation takes time and is ineffective in immediate terms.

Åkesson’s remarks emphasize the need for compassion, particularly towards young individuals who might face deportation to a country where they have little to no connection, especially in cases where they have been raised in Sweden. He articulates concern that sending teenage girls who are still in high school back to the homeland of their parents could be harmful and unjust. Åkesson's proposal comes amidst ongoing discussions in parliament about the treatment of these young deportees and opposition calls for a quicker resolution to end deportations altogether.

The suggestion for a moratorium by Åkesson highlights the tensions within Swedish politics regarding immigration and deportation policies. While his party, the Sweden Democrats, has previously voted against proposals from other parties aimed at protecting deportees, this recent shift in stance may indicate a response to public pressures or a recalibration of party strategy in light of current political discourse surrounding migration policies.
