Election Commission to Change Early Voting Boxes to Prevent ‘Election Fraud Conspiracy’
The Korea Election Commission is changing early voting boxes to transparent materials to address conspiracy theories about election fraud ahead of local elections.
The Korea Election Commission has announced plans to replace the boxes used for early voting with transparent materials in response to growing concerns about potential election fraud. Just 90 days before the local elections set for June 3, 2023, the Commission aims to mitigate fears stemming from speculations that the opaque boxes could enable tampering. The transparent design is meant to allow clear visibility of the voting process, thus addressing public suspicions about the integrity of the election.
This change involves redesigning the containers for the 'pouch-type' early voting boxes, which will now be placed in visible, transparent holders instead of the previous white boxes that obscured the contents. The pouch-type voting mechanism has been in use since 2014, marking a significant design overhaul after nearly a decade. Additionally, the color of the pouches will change from navy blue to gray to enhance public clarity on voting operations.
Furthermore, the Korea Election Commission is also expanding the presence of election monitoring bodies. The number of members in the 'Fair Election Observation Team' will increase from 38 to 104 personnel, allowing for greater oversight during the entire electoral process. This team, which consists of representatives from political parties, civic groups, and academic circles, will be deployed across 13 regions in the country to ensure transparency and trust in the electoral process leading up to the elections in May.
