More than 60 sick babies linked to toxic baby formula

The UK Health Security Agency is investigating over 60 cases of illness in babies linked to contaminated baby formula from Nestle and Danone.

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has launched an investigation into more than 60 reported cases of babies falling ill after consuming toxic baby formula. This contamination is attributed to a heat-resistant toxin known as cereulide, which was introduced through an ingredient produced by a third-party supplier shared by major companies like Nestle and Danone. Symptoms of cereulide poisoning can include vomiting, diarrhoea, and abdominal cramps, leading to heightened public concern for infant health.

In January, Nestle initiated a recall of numerous batches of its SMA infant formula and follow-on formula due to these serious contamination issues. The recall has since expanded globally, affecting over 60 countries, as the company works to ensure the safety of its products. Danone has also responded by recalling specific batches of its Aptamil and Cow & Gate formulas, as they too face contamination concerns related to the same toxin.

As the investigation continues, the UKHSA is examining cases across the UK where infants have exhibited symptoms consistent with cereulide poisoning. This situation underscores the importance of stringent quality control in food production, particularly for products aimed at vulnerable populations such as infants, and poses significant implications for public trust in leading baby formula brands.
