Pregnant young woman shot twice inside her home in São Cristóvão

A 21-year-old pregnant woman was shot during a police operation in São Cristóvão, Rio de Janeiro, while inside her home with her sisters.

In a disturbing incident in São Cristóvão, Rio de Janeiro, a 21-year-old pregnant woman, five months along, was shot multiple times during a police operation in the Barreira do Vasco area. Her family reported that the young woman was in her bedroom with her two sisters when a shootout erupted between police and criminals nearby, leading to her being struck by two bullets. Notably, her mother had left the house to work shortly before the attack, leaving the young woman and her siblings vulnerable to the gunfire.

Emergency services rushed the pregnant woman to Maternidade Fernando Magalhães and later transferred her to Hospital Municipal Souza Aguiar in central Rio. Reports from her family indicate that the bullets hit her buttocks and also caused injuries to her intestines. She remains hospitalized as doctors have not yet removed the bullets from her body, which highlights the serious nature of her injuries and the urgent medical care she requires.

This incident underscores the pervasive issue of violence in Rio's favelas, particularly during police operations aimed at combating crime. The police have stated that they were not informed about the injury of this victim by gunfire, which raises questions about the accountability and transparency of police actions during such operations and their impact on innocent bystanders, especially vulnerable populations like pregnant women and children.
