‘Game of Thrones’ comes to the theater in the United Kingdom with George R. R. Martin as producer
A theatrical adaptation of 'Game of Thrones' titled 'Game of Thrones: The Mad King' will premiere in the UK in 2026, produced by George R. R. Martin.
The Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) has announced that the first theatrical adaptation of the famous fantasy saga 'Game of Thrones' will have its world premiere in the United Kingdom during the summer of 2026. The play, entitled 'Game of Thrones: The Mad King', is based on the works of American author George R.R. Martin and has been adapted by Duncan Macmillan with direction from Dominic Cooke. It is set to take place at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon, the birthplace of William Shakespeare, during the summer season.
This new theatrical production is a prequel that occurs more than a decade before the events of the original 'Game of Thrones' novels, bringing together the major houses such as the Targaryens, Starks, Baratheons, and Martells. These houses will gather after winter for what is designed to be the largest tournament of jousts for the time. The play is set to explore the events and relationships leading up to the famous and turbulent outcomes known from Martin's fictional universe.
In a press release, George R.R. Martin, who serves as the executive producer for the theater adaptation, expressed his excitement about the project. He noted that when he wrote 'Game of Thrones', he never envisioned it would culminate in such diverse adaptations, including this theatrical endeavor. The anticipation surrounding this adaptation illustrates Martin's influence and the enduring popularity of his saga, as fans await to see how these beloved characters and intricate stories will be transformed for the stage.
