Thomas the Tank Engine's Friend Makes Debut: Percy on the Oigawa Railway
The Oigawa Railway in Shizuoka, Japan, introduces Percy, the friend of Thomas from the British children's show, celebrating with a special event for local children.
The Oigawa Railway in Shizuoka Prefecture has announced the debut of Percy, the beloved green tank engine and friend of Thomas from the popular British television show, 'Thomas the Tank Engine.' The debut celebrations took place on May 5, where around 100 preschool children were invited to enjoy a steam locomotive ride through the lush green tea fields of the area, marking a festive occasion ahead of the official service commencement on May 7. This initiative aims to enchant young fans of the iconic series and promote tourism in the region.
Currently, the Oigawa Railway operates two of its six steam locomotives, with one previously dedicated to Thomas. However, this vehicle undergoes regular maintenance for four months each year, during which the service is temporarily halted. To ensure that the charm of Thomas and his friends continues throughout the year, the railway decided to introduce Percy by transforming one of their existing black steam locomotives into Percy’s likeness. This strategic move allows the Oigawa Railway to establish a year-round service featuring trains associated with the beloved franchise.
The introduction of Percy not only enriches the experience for fans of 'Thomas the Tank Engine' but also represents a broader effort by the Oigawa Railway to revitalize its steam train offerings and attract families looking for unique leisure activities. The inclusion of these characters into the railway's operations could potentially increase visitor engagement and offer new marketing opportunities, positioning the railway as a key destination for tourists and enthusiasts alike in Japan.
