Middle East crisis: ‘Don’t join protests you know nothing about’, clerics warn Nigerians
Islamic clerics in Lagos caution Nigerians against participating in protests they do not fully understand, particularly those related to foreign conflicts.
In Lagos, top Islamic clerics have issued a warning to Nigerians regarding participation in protests about issues they do not fully comprehend. This admonition comes from the League of Chief Imams, which highlights the dangers associated with protests being co-opted by individuals or groups seeking to incite violence. Sheikh Abdulrahman Ahmad, the National Missioner and Chief Imam of the Ansar-Ud-Deen Society of Nigeria, stressed that good intentions alone cannot safeguard the integrity of demonstrations.
During a Ramadan Tafsir/Iftar programme, these clerics specifically addressed the recent protests held in solidarity with Iran, triggered by the assassination of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. They expressed concern that such actions could unwittingly embroil Nigeria in international conflicts that do not concern the nation or its citizens. The clerics' statements underscore a broader call for discernment among Nigerians when engaging in socio-political movements that are influenced by foreign crises.
The protests led by members of the South-West chapter of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria have drawn attention and concerns from various sectors, including the government. The clerics' warning serves as a critical reminder of the need for awareness and informed participation in protests, particularly regarding complex geopolitical situations that might lead to negative repercussions for Nigerian society.
