Kristiinankaupunki published confidential personal data of dismissed education director - offers 6,000 euros for settlement

The city of Kristiinankaupunki is addressing a serious data protection breach involving the accidental release of sensitive personal data on its website, leading to a proposed settlement with the dismissed education director.

The city council of Kristiinankaupunki is set to address a significant data protection violation this coming Monday, following an incident in which the city unintentionally published sensitive personal information related to its former education director, Maarit Söderlund. The publication took place when a document from the Vaasa Administrative Court was released along with attachments on June 23, 2025. Among the 400 pages of information were personal data that should not have been made public, a breach that has raised serious concerns over data privacy in the municipality.

City Mayor Mila Segervall has proposed that the city compensates Söderlund with 6,000 euros in damages and an additional 2,430 euros to cover legal fees incurred as a result of the breach. The incident is alarming both for its implications for data protection and for the city’s governance and administrative processes. The disclosure of private information places the city at risk of legal issues and jeopardizes the trust of its citizens, making it imperative for the city council to address these shortcomings effectively.

The initial release of the confidential data remained accessible on the city’s website until August 4, 2025, although the primary notice was removed shortly after the breach. The accessibility of the associated document through search engines increases the potential for misuse of the data, prompting concerns about the city's commitment to protecting sensitive information. The council's upcoming discussions will likely focus on how to prevent such breaches in the future and restore public confidence in its data handling practices, as well as the adequacy of the proposed compensation to the affected party.
