Staggering statistic: This is how large a part of dating teenage girls have experienced relationship violence

A rising number of teenagers, particularly girls, are seeking help for relationship violence, reflecting a concerning trend in Finnish society.

In Finland, the number of young people seeking help for relationship violence has reached unprecedented levels, according to the Federation of Mother and Child Homes and Shelters. The alarming trend points particularly to an increase in dating violence among teenagers, with nearly 12,000 individuals accessing violence intervention services in just the past year. This figure marks a significant rise of over 60% since the beginning of the decade when assistance seekers numbered less than 8,000 annually. The increase, while notable, does not necessarily indicate that violence itself is escalating; rather, it suggests that more individuals are becoming proactive in seeking help.

One contributing factor to this rise is the lowering of barriers for accessing support services. More young people, including teenagers and adults, are approaching these services earlier than before. Tiina Muukkonen, a development manager at the Federation, notes that the threshold for seeking help has decreased, leading to a higher influx of young people accessing support. The crisis and relationship violence worker Maritta Illman from the Satakunta federation highlights that the youngest individuals to seek help are as young as 15 years old, showcasing the urgent need for greater awareness and education surrounding relationship violence in Finland.

This troubling statistic emphasizes the need for increased resources and education around healthy relationships, particularly for the youth. With the growing number of young victims coming forward, it prompts society to examine the dynamics of youth relationships and the pressures that may contribute to such violence. Therefore, providing adequate support and preventive education can play a crucial role in addressing both the rising awareness and the actual incidences of dating violence among Finnish teenagers.
