Tesla: IG Metall misses majority in works council elections

The IG Metall union has failed to secure a majority in recent works council elections at Tesla, falling short of its previous standing in 2024.

The IG Metall union announced it did not secure a majority in the recent works council elections held at Tesla's factory in Grünheide, near Berlin. The union, represented by its list, was the runner-up in the election, according to statements made by IG Metall leaders. This comes after a tumultuous campaign characterized by what the union described as an aggressive and underhanded approach from the employer side, leading to significant challenges for union representatives during the voting period. Christiane Benner, the head of IG Metall, reflected on the outcome as respectable in the face of severe opposition, including implicit threats from company representatives.

The winner of the election was the current works council leader Michaela Schmitz, leading a list titled "Giga United." This election marks a notable decline for IG Metall compared to their performance in the previous elections, held in 2024, where they established themselves as the largest group. Although they commanded a significant amount of votes at that time, the majority still went to candidates without union affiliation. Currently, IG Metall holds 13 out of 37 seats on the new works council, revealing a decrease in their influence within the workplace governance at Tesla.

The implications of this election are significant for labor relations at Tesla's plant and raise concerns about the level of pressure exerted on union activities. With approximately 10,700 employees at the Grünheide site, the outcome may affect the union's ongoing efforts to advocate for collective labor rights and improvements in working conditions, which could be increasingly challenged by a growing trend of union-free candidates in upcoming labor contexts.
