The National Cultural Heritage Administration demands that the former RTU building be preserved as an example of Stalinist architecture

The National Cultural Heritage Administration of Latvia is advocating for the preservation of a former RTU building in Riga, emphasizing its architectural significance from the Stalinist era.

The National Cultural Heritage Administration (NKMP) has raised concerns regarding the preservation of a former Riga Technical University (RTU) building, highlighting its historical and architectural importance as a representative example of Stalinist architecture. NKMP representative Linda Zonne-Zumberga has pointed out that the building is situated within the UNESCO World Heritage Site of 'Historic Centre of Riga' and also falls under the protected status of the national urban heritage monument and archaeological site in the Old Town. The building has retained its original volume, façade, composition, layout, and period interior decoration, which adds significant cultural value.

Discussions are currently underway regarding the future of the building, with the NKMP stressing the need for archaeological research as plans for development, such as the creation of an underground parking facility, have emerged. This notion was discussed in a Riga City Council meeting earlier this year, where various development scenarios were proposed. The NKMP has informed the property owner of the building's preserved values, emphasizing the need to carefully consider any proposed changes that could affect its integrity.

The Riga City Council has previously deliberated on potential reconstruction and development plans for the RTU building on Kalku Street. While the property owner has suggested several developmental scenarios, they have yet to define specific targets for the future of the building. The NKMP's involvement underlines the critical balance that must be maintained between urban development and the preservation of Latvia's architectural heritage, particularly in areas of historical significance like the Old Town of Riga.
