Concerns over Revision of Three Non-Nuclear Principles: 'The Principle of National Policy...' Citizens' Group Proposes Security Policy
A citizens' group has expressed concern regarding Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's intentions to revise Japan's three non-nuclear principles in a proposed update to the national security strategy.
On May 5th, a citizens' group consisting of atomic-bomb survivor organizations, namely the 'Japan Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons,' released recommendations focused on nuclear weapons amidst Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's proposal to revise Japan's national security strategy, known as the three security documents. Their statement declared that true security for Japan should come from disarmament rather than possessing nuclear weapons for deterrence. The recommendations center around four main pillars: positioning nuclear disarmament as a method for security, maintaining the three non-nuclear principles, promoting awareness of the inhumanity of nuclear weapons, and fostering dialogue on disarmament in East Asia.
