Fines for uninsured vehicles - unpaid road tax: The 'bill' reached 297,000
The Greek government has issued fines to over 297,000 vehicle owners for non-compliance with insurance and road tax regulations.
Following the distribution of three rounds of notifications to vehicle owners regarding non-compliance with insurance and road tax for the year 2025, the General Secretariat for Information Systems and Digital Governance has completed cross-checks and has begun to notify fines and debts as per Law 5113/2024. These notifications are directed at vehicle owners who had previously been informed but did not take the required compliance actions.
In total, 297,561 administrative penalties have been sent out regarding uninsured vehicles and unpaid road taxes, with specific breakdowns included. Of these, 125,051 penalties pertain to non-compliance with vehicle insurance, consisting of 116,687 penalties for individuals and 8,364 for corporate entities. Additionally, 172,510 acts have been issued for unpaid road tax for the year 2025, which breaks down into 161,456 penalties for individuals and 11,054 for legal entities.
This substantial enforcement action highlights the government's effort to increase compliance and revenue collection in the face of budgetary pressures. The fines reflect a serious approach to ensuring that all vehicle owners adhere to mandatory insurance and tax obligations, and the implications signify an ongoing push towards heightened accountability among citizens. The significant number of penalties issued indicates a widespread issue of non-compliance that authorities are now addressing more rigorously.
