Senegal and the European Union Strengthen Comprehensive Strategic Partnership
Senegal and the European Union are enhancing their comprehensive strategic partnership focusing on migration, security, and development following a visit by European commissioners to Dakar.
Senegal and the European Union have announced new steps to solidify their comprehensive strategic partnership, particularly addressing migration, security, and development issues. This development follows a high-level visit by European commissioners to the Senegalese capital, Dakar, on March 2-3, 2026. The meetings involved discussions between Senegal's President, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, and various government ministers with European Commission officials regarding maritime security, combatting illegal fishing, managing migration, and increasing investments through the 'Global Gateway' initiative.
During the visit, the European delegation inspected several Senegalese projects, including the 'Second Joint Program' and the 'Regional Fast Train.' Furthermore, 11 new boats and 6 refurbished vessels were delivered to the Senegalese police and gendarmerie, alongside the inauguration of a maritime maintenance center at Dakar Port. These initiatives aim to enhance Senegal's capabilities in addressing organized crime and illegal trafficking, showcasing the EU's commitment to strengthening regional security.
A joint statement emphasized the need to intensify cooperation in combating irregular migration, developing repatriation mechanisms, and promoting legal migration opportunities. The EU welcomed Senegal's proactive approach to these challenges, indicating a shift towards more collaborative efforts in migration management and security within the context of its broader partnership with Africa.
