Kim Received His Own Statue While Still Alive. Experts Talk About an Unusual Signal from the Regime

North Korea unveiled a statue of its leader Kim Jong-un, a move that experts say is typically reserved for deceased members of the ruling Kim dynasty.

On the weekend, North Korea revealed a statue of its leader Kim Jong-un, a significant event given that such honors are usually reserved for deceased individuals from the ruling Kim dynasty. The statue depicts the upper half of a smiling Kim with his right hand in the pocket of his flowing coat and his left hand positioned to initiate the launch of a developmental project. South Korea’s Ministry of Unification reported that state television broadcast images of the statute as part of its efforts to emphasize Kim's ongoing efforts to promote new initiatives in regional development and construction across the country.

The unveiling of Kim’s statue is particularly noteworthy because it is unusual for the North Korean regime to create a statue in honor of a living leader. Experts suggest that this act symbolizes the regime's push for further consolidation of power and a public endorsement of Kim's leadership. According to Lim Ul-chul, a specialist on North Korea from Kyungnam University in South Korea, such a display of reverence during a leader's lifetime underscores both Kim's ambitions and the regime's desire for legitimacy in the eyes of its citizens and the international community.

Furthermore, this move can be interpreted as an attempt to reinforce loyalty among the populace and solidify Kim’s image as a central figure in the ongoing narrative of North Korean governance, which often glorifies predecessors like Kim Il-sung and Kim Jong-il through monumental sculptures. The statue not only serves as a tool for propaganda but also reflects the regime's continuing narrative of development and innovation under Kim’s leadership, amidst international tensions and internal challenges.
