Honda to Reverse Import Two Models from the U.S., Expanding EV Lineup from China
Honda has announced plans to reverse import two models produced in the U.S. for domestic sale, alongside launching a new electric vehicle from China this spring.
Honda has declared its intention to reverse import two vehicles produced in the United States, set for domestic sales starting in the latter half of 2026. The models include the Acura Integra sedan and the top-tier variant of the Passport SUV, marking the first time Acura vehicles will be sold in Japan. This initiative comes as Honda faces declining sales in the domestic market, pushing the company to expand its vehicle lineup to attract more consumers.
Alongside the reverse imports, Honda is also bringing an electric vehicle (EV) produced in China – an SUV branded as the Insight – to the Japanese market. The EV boasts an impressive range of over 500 km on a single charge and is being modified for the Japanese market with right-hand drive specifications. The Insight will be limited to 3,000 units, with pre-orders set to begin on the 19th of this month, representing a significant move as this is the first time a Japanese automaker will import and sell an EV manufactured in China.
The decision to reverse import these models follows a simplified vehicle import process established under the recently renewed tariff agreement between Japan and the U.S. This strategy likely aims to bolster Honda’s domestic sales by leveraging the popularity of its Acura brand and enhancing its vehicle offerings amid a competitive automotive market in Japan.
