"Injured crew members": Russia attacked a ship in the port of Chornomorsk
A civilian ship transporting corn was attacked by a drone in the Black Sea, injuring several crew members, according to Ukrainian authorities.
Russia has been repeatedly accused by Kyiv of targeting cargo ships transporting food products to and from Ukrainian Black Sea ports throughout the four-year conflict. On the evening of March 4th, a drone strike was reported against a civilian vessel sailing under the Panamanian flag, as announced by Oleksii Kiper, head of the Odesa regional military administration. The incident occurred in Black Sea waters while the ship was departing from Chornomorsk port.
The attacked ship was reportedly carrying corn, and during the assault, several crew members sustained injuries, but they were successfully evacuated. Kiper did not disclose the name of the ship or provide an exact number of injured crew members. This attack is part of a broader context in which civilian vessels are increasingly viewed by Moscow as legitimate targets, especially following warnings issued that any ship heading to Ukrainian ports could be considered to be transporting military cargo.
Ukraine, being one of the largest producers of agricultural products, has faced significant disruptions to its export activities due to the ongoing Russian invasion. This attack highlights the high stakes in the region and the ongoing tensions that threaten not only commercial shipping but also global food supply chains, as the war continues to impact Ukraine's ability to export its agricultural goods to international markets.
