Africa exposed to Middle East war โ Experts
Experts highlight that Africa is at risk from the ongoing Middle East conflict due to geopolitical dynamics and economic impacts.
Experts are warning that Africa is structurally vulnerable to the repercussions of the ongoing Middle East war, with military bases within reach of missiles and increasing oil prices affecting the continent economically. Hubert Kinkoh, a senior researcher at the CARPO think tank, emphasizes that Africa's reliance on energy imports and its proximity to key maritime routes make it susceptible to the rapid spillover of conflict from the Middle East.
The Horn of Africa is particularly at risk, especially areas like Djibouti, where a significant U.S. military presence is located. Djibouti is strategically positioned less than 100 miles from Yemen, which houses Houthi rebels equipped with a stockpile of missiles provided by Iran. Although the Houthis have yet to actively participate in the current conflict, their past actions demonstrate a capacity for disrupting shipping in the Red Sea, which could have severe implications for global trade.
Furthermore, the instability in the Middle East brings forth significant challenges for African nations that often are caught up in conflicts that they do not control but must bear the consequences. This situation calls for increased awareness and proactive measures to safeguard African interests as the geopolitical landscape continues to evolve.
