Gadeokdo New Airport Still Far to Go ... Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport 'Beginning Full Construction by the End of Year'

Construction on the Gadeokdo New Airport is set to commence by the end of the year, following a contract agreement with the Daewoo Construction consortium.

The construction of the Gadeokdo New Airport is moving forward as Daewoo Construction consortium engages in a contract for the site preparation work, with efforts to initiate preliminary construction by year-end. The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport (MOLIT) and the Gadeokdo Airport Construction Corporation announced plans to hold an informational meeting on September 9, targeting the Daewoo Construction consortium, which has passed the pre-qualification review for the construction bid. Due to two previous unsuccessful bids, MOLIT decided to proceed with this contract agreement with Daewoo instead.

According to the bid regulations, Daewoo Construction consortium is required to complete the basic design within 180 days following the informational meeting. After this phase, the Central Construction Technology Review Committee will validate the appropriateness of the designs. If Daewoo Construction is deemed eligible, they will move on to the detailed design phase and aim to commence the priority construction segment within the year.

In an effort to ensure smooth project implementation, the government has formed and will operate a 'Gadeokdo Airport Project Promotion Consultative Body' with Busan City and the construction corporation. This consultative body will oversee various aspects required for commencement, such as permits and compensation, while also identifying local collaboration projects aimed at revitalizing the regional economy and supporting residents. Previously, the construction contract was awarded to the Hyundai Construction consortium, which later withdrew its participation last year due to the denial of an extension on the construction timeline, leading to a re-bid for the contract.
