Kyiv: Russia Attacked a Civilian Cargo Ship in the Black Sea
Russia targeted a civilian cargo ship in the Black Sea, according to Ukrainian military officials, during an ongoing conflict spanning four years.
In the long-standing war between Ukraine and Russia, Ukraine has routinely accused Moscow of attacking cargo ships that transport food products to and from its Black Sea ports. Recently, Olehas Kiperis, head of the Odessa regional military administration, reported that a drone strike hit a civilian vessel flying a Panama flag on the evening of March 4. The incident occurred in the waters of the Black Sea as the ship was departing from the port of Chornomorsk.
The cargo ship was reportedly carrying corn, and several crew members were injured during the attack. Although Kiperis did not disclose the name of the ship or the exact number of injuries, he confirmed that the crew was evacuated safely. This incident adds to the growing concerns about maritime safety in the region, particularly since Moscow has previously warned that any ship heading towards Ukrainian ports could be considered as carrying military cargo.
Ukraine is one of the largest agricultural producers in the world, and the ongoing Russian invasion has severely disrupted its ability to export these goods. The attack on the cargo ship not only highlights the risks faced by commercial vessels in the Black Sea but also underscores the broader implications for global food supply chains amidst ongoing hostilities.
