'My daughter was left disabled because doctors didn't listen to me'

A mother shares her traumatic experience of how her daughter's disability resulted from doctors ignoring her medical concerns during pregnancy.

Anna Martin, a 31-year-old mother from the UK, has opened up about the harrowing experience surrounding her daughter's birth, which led to her being born with lifelong disabilities. Anna contracted chickenpox while pregnant and expressed concerns about the virus's impact on her health and her unborn child to medical professionals. Despite attending her GP and A&E multiple times, her worries were dismissed, and she was not provided with appropriate treatment.

The refusal to heed Anna's warnings had devastating consequences, culminating in the birth of her daughter, Genevieve, in November 2022, who was diagnosed with congenital varicella syndrome—a serious condition stemming from the mother’s chickenpox infection. In addition to this syndrome, Genevieve was born with other severe physical disabilities, including longitudinal limb deficiency and fibular hemimelia, resulting in a shortened leg and a limited number of toes on her smaller foot.

Anna and her fiancé I've faced immense emotional turmoil following the birth, leading Anna to advocate for better listening practices in the medical field for expectant mothers. She emphasizes the need for healthcare professionals to take worries seriously and provide appropriate care to prevent such tragedies from occurring again. The story sheds light on the broader issue of healthcare accountability and the importance of patient advocacy, particularly regarding maternal and child health.
