The Era of 'Post-Promotion': How Old Cars Become Smart?

As the prices of new cars continue to rise, companies are offering solutions to upgrade old vehicles instead of replacing them.

With the rising prices of new automobiles, an increasing number of electronics companies are developing technologies aimed at upgrading older vehicles rather than encouraging their replacement. The German company Blaupunkt has recently unveiled a new multimedia system named Wolfsburg 648, designed specifically for Volkswagen, Skoda, and Seat models manufactured between 2008 and 2010. This catering toward older vehicle owners reflects a growing trend to make cars 'smart' without the need for a complete overhaul.

The Wolfsburg 648 system targets owners of cars equipped with a double DIN slot and features a 7-inch touchscreen complemented by physical buttons on either side, preserving the original dashboard aesthetics while integrating modern digital functionalities. This innovative device supports contemporary connectivity options such as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, enabling users to connect their smartphones and access navigation, music, and phone calls through the central display.

In addition to its classic design, the system boasts advanced capabilities such as a digital radio tuner, and a 12-band equalizer to enhance in-car audio quality, providing a more enjoyable experience for drivers and passengers alike. The package includes an external microphone for hands-free calls, a Quadlock connector for CAN interface, and an antenna adapter, reinforcing the trend of retrofitting older models with cutting-edge technology and ensuring their relevance in the modern automotive landscape.
