Formula One is undergoing significant rule changes that will radically alter the designs of cars starting in the 2026 season.
Formula One is set to undergo a significant transformation starting with the 2026 season, as a wave of rule changes emerges, which are being described as the largest upheaval in the sport's history. These modifications aim to improve racing dynamics and increase overtaking opportunities for drivers. The new regulations will fundamentally change the appearance and specifications of the racing cars, making them smaller and lighter than their predecessors.
The upcoming 2026 F1 cars will have notable design changes, including a reduction in width by 10 centimeters and a closer distance between the front and rear axles by 20 centimeters. Specifically, the wheelbase will be set at 3,400 millimeters, and the overall width will be 1,900 millimeters. Additionally, the minimum weight requirement for the cars has been reduced by 30 kilograms, meaning that the cars now must weigh at least 768 kilograms when including the driver and tires, while the minimum weight of the chassis alone has been adjusted to 724 kilograms.
These adjustments reflect F1's ongoing commitment to evolving the sport to enhance competitive racing while possibly addressing safety and environmental concerns as well. By making the cars smaller and lighter, F1 aims to facilitate closer racing and more opportunities for overtaking during races, ultimately enriching the viewing experience for fans and enhancing the overall spectacle of Formula One events.
