Dust Traps. Why You Should Clean and Restore Radiators?

Radiators accumulate dust over time, leading to potential issues with air quality, and experts recommend regular cleaning to maintain both efficiency and aesthetics.

Radiators are often seen as dust traps due to their complex structure that makes cleaning a challenge. According to experts at Rīga Technical University, although dust may theoretically reduce heat output, its more significant impact is on air quality. Over time, if a large amount of dust accumulates, it can act as an insulating material, potentially hindering the radiator's effectiveness. Nevertheless, ensuring cleanliness is also crucial for aesthetic reasons and overall indoor air quality.

Experts suggest that radiators should be cleaned regularly, with simple methods for the external surfaces, such as using a damp cloth. However, cleaning the inner parts of the radiator is considerably more challenging. Most radiators have removable top grilles, which, when taken off, allow for more effective dust removal. Anna Luīze Blodona-Burmistre, the project manager at the "Elektrum" Energy Centre, emphasizes that in ideal cases, one should remove the top to facilitate thorough vacuuming of all the accumulated dust.

The advice to maintain the cleanliness of radiators comes not only from an aesthetic standpoint but also from a health perspective, as dust can contribute to reduced air quality inside homes, potentially leading to respiratory issues. Therefore, ensuring that radiators are regularly cleaned and maintained is essential for both comfort and health in living spaces.
