Boycott expands - reason Russian involvement

Finland will not participate in the opening ceremonies of the Milan-Cortina Paralympics due to the inclusion of Russian and Belarusian athletes under the IPC's decision.

Finland has officially announced its decision to boycott the opening ceremonies of the Milan-Cortina Paralympics scheduled for March 6, attributing this action to the International Paralympic Committee's (IPC) controversial decision to grant personal bipartite athlete slots, commonly known as wild cards, to athletes from Russia and Belarus. This decision has raised considerable tension among countries that have openly supported Ukraine in the ongoing conflict with Russia.

Alongside Finland, countries such as Estonia, Latvia, the Czech Republic, and Poland have also declared their intention to boycott the ceremonies. Recent updates indicate that the total number of nations participating in the boycott has now increased to eleven, as Canada, Croatia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, and Germany have joined the initiative, showcasing a broader international response to the IPC's decision concerning Russian athletes.

In addition to political implications, logistical challenges have also contributed to the decision of some countries, including Sweden, which has cited logistical reasons for their absence as reported by Swedish media. This growing trend reflects the ongoing discourse around international sports and the ramifications of geopolitical conflicts, highlighting how sports governance continues to intersect with international politics.
