Democratic Party President Tamaki expresses intention to participate in the National Conference: 'Requests have been accepted'
Yuichiro Tamaki, president of the Democratic Party for the People, announced his intention to participate in the National Conference addressing issues such as food consumption tax cuts, stating the government's acceptance of their requests as a reason.
Yuichiro Tamaki, the leader of the Democratic Party for the People in Japan, publicly expressed his decision to join the National Conference focused on discussing measures such as reducing consumption taxes on food products. This announcement came during a party meeting where Tamaki indicated that the government's response to several requests regarding the management of the conference influenced his decision to participate. These requests included issues related to the transparency of the meetings, the selection of experts, and the organization of the secretariat.
The Democratic Party for the People has been advocating for a significant reduction in the consumption tax, proposing a uniform decrease to 5%. Tamaki emphasized that addressing only the consumption tax on food products with a zero rate could bring about several negative consequences, which have been highlighted by various experts. He aims to present data, facts, and evidence to underline his party's stance in discussions and to address potential pitfalls in implementing selective tax reductions.
Previously, when the National Conference held its initial meeting at the Prime Ministerβs Official Residence on February 26, only the 'Team Future' (an opposition group) accepted the invitation to participate, while Tamaki's party and another centrist party opted out. Thus, Tamaki's recent announcement marks a pivotal shift in his party's engagement with government discussions on social security and economic policy.
