Reports of an oil tanker explosion off Kuwait, authorities deny its occurrence at their coasts
Reports of an oil tanker explosion near Kuwait have been denied by local authorities, who state no such incident occurred in their waters.
On Thursday morning, the UK Marine Trade Operations (UKMTO) reported an explosion on an oil tanker anchored near the coast of Kuwait, prompting concerns about safety and environmental impact. However, the Kuwaiti Ministry of Interior quickly refuted these claims, clarifying that the incident actually took place outside of Kuwait's territorial waters, approximately 30 nautical miles southeast of Mubarak Al-Kabeer Port.
The commander of the tanker reportedly witnessed an explosion on the left side of the vessel and observed a small boat leaving the area. Following the initial reports, the UKMTO expressed concern that oil had leaked from the vessel's cargo tank into surrounding waters, potentially leading to environmental ramifications. Despite the leak, they confirmed that there were no fires or injuries reported among the crew.
Kuwaiti authorities have since initiated an investigation into the incident, advising all ships in the vicinity to navigate carefully and to report any suspicious activities. The situation raises important questions regarding maritime safety and the effects of such incidents on local ecosystems, as well as the protocols for handling such emergencies in international waters.
