QLD truck driver avoids jail over crash at 'notorious' SA intersection
A Queensland truck driver has been spared jail time after causing a serious crash at a problematic intersection in South Australia.
Ross Phillip Hicks, a 64-year-old truck driver from Queensland, has avoided a jail sentence despite causing a crash that injured several people at a notorious intersection in Adelaide. The incident occurred in July 2022, when Hicks, during his first trip to the city, mistakenly selected the wrong gear while approaching the South Eastern Freeway. This error prevented him from being able to slow down the truck before descending into the dangerous intersection, which has a history of similar accidents.
During the court proceedings, it was revealed that Hicks had disregarded numerous warning signs that indicated the intersection's dangerous nature. Judge Anthony Allen expressed concern that Hicks 'clearly did not pay enough attention' to these warnings, which could have potentially prevented the crash. Despite the severity of the accident, Hicks has been placed under a two-year good behaviour bond instead of receiving jail time.
The case highlights ongoing safety concerns regarding this intersection and raises questions about driver responsibility when navigating hazardous areas, especially for those unfamiliar with the terrain. The decision to impose a good behaviour bond rather than incarceration may prompt discussions about the adequacy of legal penalties in deterring reckless driving in high-risk locations.
