Lassa fever: Enugu on alert after Benue health workers death

The Enugu State Government has heightened health surveillance in response to fatalities among health workers in Benue State due to Lassa fever.

The Enugu State Government has raised its health alert status following the tragic deaths of ten health care workers in neighboring Benue State, linked to the ongoing Lassa fever outbreak. Enugu's Health Commissioner, Prof George Ugwu, announced the alarming situation during a press briefing, emphasizing that although Enugu has only recorded nine suspected cases without confirmed infections this season, the ongoing outbreak in closely situated states warrants immediate preventive measures.

Ugwu highlighted the grim national outlook on the Lassa fever situation, revealing that there have been 1,469 suspected cases reported nationally, with 318 confirmed and over 70 deaths across multiple states, including Taraba, Ondo, Bauchi, Edo, Nasarawa, Kogi, and Ebonyi. The proximity of Benue and Ebonyi to Enugu necessitated the declaration of a high alert status, indicating the potential risk of the disease spilling over. Enhanced surveillance has been implemented across all local government areas, particularly in identified hotspots, to monitor and control the spread of the virus.

In response to the potential threat, the Enugu health authorities are committed to being proactive, which includes elevating their surveillance efforts and readiness for possible Lassa fever cases. The community is being urged to remain vigilant and report any unusual symptoms to healthcare professionals, highlighting the importance of awareness and immediate action to prevent further health complications centered around the Lassa fever threat during this critical period.
