APC panel defends Benue congress as more state executives emerge
The APC in Benue State concludes its congresses amidst internal divisions, as various factions produce competing party executives.
The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Nigeria's Benue State has finalized its congresses for forming leadership at various levels, resulting in the emergence of more state executives. Dr. Auwalu Ishiye, chairman of the congress committee, affirmed that the process leading to the election of Mr. Benjamin Omale as the state chairman adhered to party guidelines. This process reflects an internal cohesion within the Benue State chapter, even though parallel congresses were held by factions aligned with Governor Hyacinth Alia and the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume.
The congresses, however, were marked by significant factional strife, with two different factions producing distinct party executives, raising concerns about unity within the party. President Bola Tinubu had previously urged reconciliation between the factions, as conveyed by Vice President Kashim Shettima during an APC stakeholders summit. The ongoing divisions within the APC underscore the challenges the party faces in maintaining cohesion and discipline among its ranks, especially in regions with strong local allegiances.
As the APC navigates these internal challenges in Benue State, the implications for party unity and the effectiveness of governance in the region are critical. The outcomes of these congresses will likely influence the party's strategies heading into the next electoral cycle and shape its approach to addressing the needs of constituents divided along factional lines. The resolution of disputes within the party will be key to fostering a stronger political landscape in Benue and ensuring that the APC remains competitive in Nigerian politics.
