Coolgardie RSL enjoying revival by appealing to wider community

The Coolgardie RSL has successfully increased its membership and volunteer numbers by appealing to the broader community.

The Coolgardie Returned and Services League (RSL) has experienced significant growth in membership and volunteer engagement over the past year, primarily by opening its doors to the wider community. Unlike many other regional sub-branches in Western Australia, which are seeing a decline in participation, Coolgardie's RSL has managed to double its member base, surpassing 100 members, with a notable 70% of them not being veterans. This initiative has transformed the RSL from a primarily veterans-focused organization into one that serves various local residents, effectively fostering a sense of community inclusion.

Approximately one in ten residents of Coolgardie, a town of around 1,000 people, has now joined the RSL. The strategic pivot toward community engagement is seen as a critical factor in the club's revival, as highlighted by Tony Ball, the local sub-branch secretary. The organization has moved away from a narrow focus on veterans, instead emphasizing participation and activities that appeal to all community members, thereby enhancing its relevance and visibility in Coolgardie.

Other regional RSL sub-branches, such as those in Esperance and York, are observing Coolgardie’s success and considering similar strategies to boost their own declining membership numbers. This trend signals a potential shift in how veterans’ organizations operate, suggesting that embracing a broader community focus may be essential for survival in the face of changing demographics and interests.
