The appeal hearing of Aquiles Alvarez in the Goleada case has been postponed again
The Provincial Court of Justice of Pichincha has postponed the appeal hearing for Guayaquil's mayor, Aquiles Alvarez, in the Goleada case due to the unavailability of judges and the prosecutor.
The Pichincha Provincial Court of Justice has once again postponed the appeal hearing scheduled for March 5 regarding Guayaquil's mayor, Aquiles Alvarez, who is embroiled in the Goleada case. Originally, this hearing was set to take place on Thursday, but it was declared unsuccessful when the case's prosecutor, Dennis Villavicencio, did not attend due to participating in an event in Brazil.
Additionally, on the Wednesday prior to the hearing, it was revealed that the Judicial Council authorized two out of the three judges on the initial panel to travel to Panama for a conference happening on the same dates as the hearing. This led to the formation of a new appeal tribunal within the Pichincha Provincial Court of Justice. Judges Silvana Velasco and Byron UzcΓ‘tegui were replaced by Mabel Tapia and Esteban Coronel, alongside Wiler Choez, making up the newly constituted tribunal. Despite this restructuring, the hearing could not commence as the new judges had prior commitments that prevented them from attending the session.
This ongoing situation raises questions about the efficiency of the judicial process and the impact of administrative decisions on high-profile cases such as this. As Alvarez seeks to navigate these legal hurdles, the delays could affect public perception of his leadership and the overall trust in the judicial system in Ecuador. The community and political analysts alike will be watching closely as the case continues to unfold amidst these procedural challenges.
