The 'Domination of Power' Becomes the New Normal in the World – Expectations for Middle Powers: A Survey of Experts from 26 Countries
A recent survey indicates that the global order is shifting towards one dominated by power rather than rules, with a significant majority of Japanese experts expressing this concern.
A survey conducted by 'Genron NPO' among experts from 26 countries has revealed that the dominance of power in global affairs is no longer seen as a temporary phenomenon, but rather a new normal. This sentiment was particularly strong among Japanese respondents, with nearly 90% agreeing that an order based on power will be central in the future. The survey highlights a growing expectation for middle powers, such as Japan and European nations, to play significant roles in a rules-based international community.
The findings show a substantial 62.1% of global experts believe that a power-based order will characterize future international relations, with only 11.9% considering it a temporary trend. This suggests a widespread acknowledgment of a fundamental shift in global structures, with many experts believing that the existing international system is undergoing significant transformation.
Specifically, Japanese responses were illuminating, with 86% of experts positing that the future world order would not be dominated by the United States. This indicates a strong pivot towards collective responsibilities among nations and an acknowledgment of the intricate dynamics between major powers like the US and China. With Japan advocating for cooperation among middle powers and the EU, the survey reflects a call for a strategic rethinking of global collaboration in light of these emerging realities.
