Wike promises FCT indigenous people CofO on ancestral lands
The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has warned residents to be cautious of opportunistic politicians and reiterated his commitment to granting Certificates of Occupancy to indigenous people of the FCT.
In a recent address to the residents of the Abuja Municipal Area Council, Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, emphasized the importance of vigilance against so-called 'emergency human rights activists and democrats' who exploit community sentiments for personal political gain. He cautioned that such individuals often engage with the populace only during election cycles to gather support, but disappear without fulfilling their promises or addressing community needs afterward. This statement underscores the ongoing tensions regarding political representation and accountability in the region.
Wike's visit followed the February 21 FCT Area Council elections, where he expressed gratitude to party leaders, council officials, and community members. During his remarks, he reflected on a recent town hall meeting that was called at the behest of President Bola Tinubu. At this meeting, residents were encouraged to propose projects that would materially benefit their neighborhoods, showcasing an effort towards greater civic engagement and participatory governance.
Among the priorities identified at this town hall was the development of the Saburi road, which Wike highlighted as a critical infrastructure project for the area. His commitment to granting Certificates of Occupancy to indigenous people of the FCT signifies a move toward recognizing local ownership and rights, which could have profound implications for land tenure and empowerment of local communities.
