PGE will build new gas units for 6 billion PLN

PGE Polska Grupa Energetyczna has signed contracts for the construction of open-cycle gas turbine blocks in Rybnik and Gryfino, totaling approximately 6 billion PLN.

PGE Polska Grupa Energetyczna, a leading Polish energy company, has entered into contracts with a consortium consisting of Polimex Mostostal S.A. and Siemens Energy for the construction of open-cycle gas turbine (OCGT) blocks in Rybnik and Gryfino. Each block will have a capacity of approximately 600 MW, with the total value of these agreements, including a 12-year service, reaching around 6 billion PLN. The projects are anticipated to strengthen Poland's energy infrastructure significantly.

By early 2030, PGE is expected to have nearly 3.5 GW of installed gas capacity in these two locations. The new gas plants are expected to complement the growing amount of energy available from offshore wind farms, which are set to increase significantly in the Polish energy mix. Dariusz Lubera, the president of PGE, emphasized that the new gas units will serve as a contingency measure during peak electricity demand periods, ensuring stability in the energy system.

The development of these gas units is crucial given the transition towards renewable energy sources and the need for reliable backup systems in Poland's electricity grid. As the renewable energy landscape expands, gas power plants are prepared to balance fluctuations in power generation and respond swiftly to changing demand levels. This strategic move reflects PGE's commitment to enhancing energy security in Poland while aligning with European energy transition goals.
