Expert: It May Become Longer, More Expensive, and More Difficult to Fly

An aviation expert warns that conflict in the Middle East may lead to increased travel duration, costs, and safety concerns for passengers.

Thousands of Swedes have been stranded due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, causing significant disruptions in air travel. According to aviation expert Jan Ohlsson, if the attacks persist, air travelers will face longer and costlier journeys, highlighting the increased risks involved in flying. Despite these concerns, Sweden's Transport Agency asserts that flying remains safe as long as airspaces are open.

Since the outbreak of the Ukraine war in 2022, EU airlines have altered their flight paths to avoid Russian airspace en route to Asia, resulting in two new flight corridors. The most frequented route for flights heading to Northern Asia traverses to the south of Russia, over nations including Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Georgia. Conversely, flights to Southern Asia generally prefer to utilize a route that passes through the Arabian Peninsula, which risks passing over the conflict zones between the USA/Israel and Iran, raising security and safety concerns for airlines.

As air travel continues to face challenges from geopolitical tensions and potential dangers, passengers may have to adjust their travel plans longer-term. The dynamic nature of international conflict and its repercussions on global air transportation could result in increased ticket prices and longer flight times for various destinations, placing additional pressure on travelers and airlines alike. The aviation industry must navigate these complexities to ensure the safety and security of travelers amidst a tumultuous geopolitical landscape.
